BTEC Diploma Sport and Active Leisure Level 1 (Pearson)

Over the year you will be studying eight vocational units: taking part in sport, improving your own fitness, safe learning in the workplace, risks and hazards, taking part in exercise and fitness, how the body works, planning your own fitness programme, leading a sports and active leisure activity, working and job opportunities in sport and active leisure, preparing for work placement, learning from a work placement.

You will be working individually and as part of a group. Lectures are normally classroom based. A day visit to an outdoor activity centre and a work placement are features of this programme.


On this course you can choose also take part in our Golf Pathway in partnership with Theydon Bois Golf Club. If you are interested in pursuing a career in the golf industry, or simply want to enjoy the competitive side of the game whilst continuing your academic study, this is the pathway for you!

The programme is aimed at golfers of all levels, from beginners to single figure handicaps. You will play regular, competitive features in both the college order of merit and against other teams from across the region.

In choosing to study on the golf pathway at New City College, you will receive the following;

  • Competitive NCC order of merit fixtures every Wednesday (scratch and net).
  • Regular competitive matches against other colleges.
  • Access to PGA professional coaching on a weekly basis.

  • Access to Theydon Bois GC fixtures and facilities throughout your study.


On this course you can choose also take part in the athletics programme, where you will receive six hours coaching per week at the London Community Stadium and also prepare for and enter athletics competitions. Training sessions are planned to take place in the evening, after your studies.

This programme is in partnership with 110% Beyond Your Limits. The coaches, English record holder in the 110m hurdles Tony Jarrett and former GB international 110m hurdler Gianni Frankis, aim to provide the highest quality training sessions based on their knowledge and experiences from the world of Athletics.

Entry Requirement:

2 or 3 GCSEs at grade 2 or above (depending on the subject) including English language and maths. If no GCSEs, college assessment at Entry Level 3, Successful completion of Entry Level 3 qualification.
