Topics

This is a one-year full time course and it is designed for students with little or no previous experience or knowledge about bricklaying - although in some cases you may have already completed a City & Guilds multi-trade course.

The aim of the course is to develop the basic employment skills, practical skills and knowledge required in order to become a competent and employable bricklayer.

You can expect to study topics including:

  • Health and Safety Information
  • Quantities
  • Communication with others
  • Building methods and construction technology
  • Basic block laying skills
  • Basic cavity walling
  • Building basic masonry structures up to damp proof course level

If you have not achieved GCSE grade 4 or above in English, you will study an additional English course. If you have not achieved GCSE grade 4 or above in Maths, you will study an additional Maths course.

There are two online examinations that must be completed by students with practical assessments completed within a portfolio.

The City and Guilds Level 1 Bricklaying course is a very practical qualification that is primarily aimed at those students who would like to pursue a career within the construction industry. This course introduces you to bricklaying as a career, allowing you to learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment. The course will provide a solid understanding of the importance of safety at work and will give you the chance to visit real sites to widen your knowledge of the construction industry.

  • Assessment Criteria

All online examination based units are externally assessed whilst practical units are internally assessed. You will build up a portfolio of evidence which will be internally assessed and verified by the centre and then externally verified by City & Guilds.

Further Information

On successful completion of the Level 1 course you will progress onto the Level 2 Bricklaying course. Alternatively you may wish to undertake an apprenticeship programme.
