Topics

The BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate in Business is a two-year course equivalent to one A Level. It is for students who are interested in learning about the business sector alongside other fields of study, with a view to progressing to a wide range of higher education courses, not necessarily in business-related subjects. It offers an alternative to A Level Business by assessing students' understanding of business through vocational scenarios. It is designed to be taken as part of a programme of study that includes other A Levels.

The aim is to give the student a coherent overview of the business sector. In the first year, the course allows you to gain an understanding of the business environment and how to develop a marketing campaign. The second year covers personal and business finance and a module of your choice. There is the opportunity to gain practical work-related skills through completing projects and assignments based on realistic workplace situations.

 You can expect to study:

  • Business Environments
  • Finance
  • Marketing
  • One optional unit, choices include Work Experience, The English Legal System and Market Research

You will learn about what goes into running businesses, financial decision-making and the importance of being an effective manager. The course will also help you develop skills in communication and ICT. It suits students who want to progress to higher education or an apprenticeship and ultimately to employment in the business sector.  The Extended Certificate is studied alongside two or three other A Levels. Students are expected to complete an introductory task before induction. Most subjects combine well, providing the student has a business-related career path in mind.

  • Assessment Criteria

    75% exam and 25% practical/coursework in year 2

  • Further Information

Two year Level 3 BTEC course of 4x 70min lessons per week (equivalent to 1 A Level); subject to the successful completion of a certificate (equivalent to 0.5 A Levels) in the first year.

Further information

This course gives students an introduction to business that will prepare them for further study, training or employment. Students are awarded Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction* grades which carry UCAS points for progression to many degree courses, along with success in their other Level 3 courses. Students should check entry requirements for degree programmes at specific universities. Former students have also gone on to work and to higher apprenticeships in banking, retail, finance and ICT.
