Topics

The aim of the course is for students to be able to study a wide range of Science subjects with units covering aspects of Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Maths. In addition students will be encouraged to develop their practical skills through their own scientific investigation. The BTEC course is designed for students who wish to pursue a career in Science via both apprenticeship and university routes.

Students can expect to study units including:

  • Fundamentals of Science
  • Working in the Science Industry
  • Physiology of Human Body Systems
  • Chemical Laboratory Techniques
  • Medical Physics Techniques
  • Using Mathematical Tools in Science

Students will develop skills in communication and ICT through completing assignments based on vocational scenarios. The course focusses on the holistic development of the practical, interpersonal and thinking skills required to be able to succeed in employment and higher education. This BTEC is assessed via internally assessed coursework.

The BTEC Extended Diploma in Science is a full programme of study on a student’s timetable, equivalent to three A Levels, and is therefore not taken with any other subjects.

The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Science is a two-year course
equivalent to three A Levels. The BTEC qualifications provide a more practical,
real-world approach to learning alongside a theoretical background and give
students the skills needed to prepare for employment. BTEC Science covers a
broad area of Science and will give you an introduction into this fascinating
field of study. It offers an alternative to A Levels in Science and is suitable
for students with a keen interest in Science, particularly Biology
and Chemistry, who prefer coursework to exams.
  • Further Information

Two year Level 3 BTEC course of 4x 70min lessons per week (equivalent to 1 A Level); subject to the successful completion of a certificate (equivalent to 0.5 A Levels) in the first year.

Further information

As a Level 3 qualification, the Extended Diploma grades carry UCAS points which allow many of our students to progress onto university degree courses. Alternatively it provides students with a potential route onto apprenticeship schemes. Former students who have been successful on this course have progressed to study degrees including, Biomedical Science, Paramedic Science, Biology, Medical Sciences, Biochemistry, Forensic Science and Diagnostic Radiography.
