Biomedical Science (Level 3 Diploma)

All Learners study the same units in the first year. There are 4 core units:

• Principles and Applications of Applied Science I
• Science Investigation Skills
• Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques
• Laboratory Techniques and their Application

A choice of 2 optional units from below:

• Physiology of Human Body Systems
• Microbiology and Microbiological Techniques
• Electrical Circuits and their Applications
• Genetics and Genetic Engineering
• Human Regulation and Reproduction
• Biological Molecules and Biochemical Processes

In the first year there is an emphasis on building skills, both scientific and professional. You will learn practical skills and how to evaluate and present quality written work whilst adhering to deadlines which prepares you well for university. The first year units will enable students to follow the Applied Science pathway as a discrete qualification and the first year Biomedical Science pathway.

In the second year learners on the Biomedical Science pathway will study 3 core units and 4 optional units.

• Contemporary issues in Science
• Investigative project

A choice of 4 optional units from below:

• Genetics
• Biomedical Science
• Diseases and Infections
• Biological Molecules and Biochemical Processes
• Medical Physics Applications
• Human Regulation and Reproduction
• Applications of Organic Chemistry
• Diseases and Infection

Students learn to analyse and critique scientific literature and build on reporting and analysis skills specific to Biomedical Science pathway.
