Entry requirements

For entry to this course you will need at least one of the following qualifications: - PEO2 Mechanical - level 2 Fdn_Engineering Certificate Additional requirements: - GCSE English and maths at grade 4 (C) or above, or equivalent level 2 qualifications - A face-to-face interview may be required before an offer can be made Additional information for international students: If English is not your first language, you will need an International English Language Test System (IELTS) score of at least 5.5 in each component (reading, writing, listening and speaking), or an equivalent English language qualification.


This one-year Level 3 Engineering course has been developed to provide students with extensive underpinning knowledge and related practical skills in a range of engineering subjects, along with vocational experience and an expectation of the situations that they could face in an engineering job role. The qualification could also provide students with the opportunity to progress to a higher-level course.

This course has been specifically designed for students undertaking specific pathways within an advanced Apprenticeship or school leavers who are interested in pursuing a career in the engineering sector.  The qualification may also be suitable for adults who are interested in engineering technology or for those who are considering a career change.

You can expect to study some of the following units:

  • Engineering and environmental health and safety – mandatory unit
  • Mechanical engineering principles – optional unit
  • Engineering organisational efficiency and mprovement – optional unit
  • Further engineering mathematics – optional unit
  • Further electrical and electronic principles – optional unit
  • Further engineering science – optional unit
  • Electrical and electronic principles – optional unit
  • Advanced turning and advanced milling – optional unit

Students study the mandatory unit and, in addition, four other units, some of which are listed above. Assessments have been designed to assess the knowledge, understanding and skills of students for all units studied.

  • Assessment Criteria

    There will be both written and practical assessments to complete, including online multiple-choice exams as well as practical and theory tasks.

What Can This Course Lead To

Successful completion of this course can lead to study at a higher level, specialising in a particular aspect of Engineering, or other Automotive and Engineering programmes. The course develops a wide range of transferable skills, such as problem-solving, team working, understanding technical information, critical thinking and gaining the necessary workshop skills that the sector requires. Students will develop the confidence, knowledge and skills needed if they choose to go directly into employment in the engineering or technology industry or if they wish to seek a vocational apprenticeship or trainee role. Former students have gone on to jobs such as a maintenance engineer, mechanical engineer, welder and/or fabricator, and electrical and/or electronic engineer.
