Sport (Level 3 Extended Diploma)

Course Overview

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at grade 4 or higher, including English and Maths, or equivalent Level 2 qualification at merit grade including English and Maths


If you are interested in a career in sports science, coaching, development sports therapy, or teaching this is the course for you! Academically, you will study towards the BTEC Level 3 National Foundation Diploma in Sports Performance and development pathway which will develop the practical skills and theoretical knowledge you will need to succeed in your chosen career.

The Foundation Diploma is a one-year course; however, the vast majority of students will stay on into year 2 to complete the BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Sports. On the course you will study a wide range of topics including:

Year 1

  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Fitness training and programming
  • Sports leadership
  • Sports coaching
  • Sports psychology
  • Application of fitness testing
  • Professional development in the sports industry

Year 2

  • Practical sports performance
  • Sports injury management
  • Research methods
  • Development & provision of sport
  • Investigating business in sport
  • Skill acquisition in sport
  • Principles and practices in outdoor activities

The course is assessed through a combination of exams (2 in year 1 and 2 in year 2) and the rest through assignments, upon completion of this qualification you will have the equivalent of 3-A levels after 2 years.

As you progress through the programme you will enhance your understanding of a wide variety of topics and undertake some practical elements as well as the looking into the theoretical aspects of the sports industry and this will help set you up for progression either into the work place or moving into Higher Education.
