We live in an increasingly online world. The creative and media industries encompass a wide range of disciplines and throughout the course, students will have a chance to learn about the creative process and how Digital Publishing skills can lead to careers in the media industries. Students entering the industry over the next few years may even help develop the next successful idea for exploiting the ever-increasing appetite for digital content.

This is an exciting course for those keen to develop a career in the creative media industry. This course will prepare students with technical skills and knowledge related to fields such as web design, journalism, digital graphic design, page layout (of text and images), photo editing, magazines and advertising. There are now lots of new opportunities in digital formats, as consumers increasingly use smart devices to access media content. Alongside the technical skills, there will also be an opportunity to develop key transferrable skills, such as team working and creative thinking.

You can expect to:

  • Learn skills in producing digital content through mastering software used for image manipulation, website creation, online layout and publishing>
  • Complete real-world projects and assignments to use key creative skills in one or more specialisms to create online digital content>
  • Pr>oduce a digital portfolio that shows evidence of practical work and assignments that can be used as a means of gaining a career or gain access to courses in the digital media sector>

The College provides the necessary equipment but it can be helpful to have access to a digital camera and a computer for editing. This BTEC Extended Diploma course is a full study programme and cannot be combined with other courses. It is equivalent to three A Levels. Further guidance and advice will be given at enrolment.

What Can This Course Lead To

Progress to university, further study, a higher level apprenticeship or employment.

The ultimate aim of the course is to successfully prepare students to start work in the creative media industry or to progress to related higher education courses. Since this is a vocational course, it will be ideal preparation for a career in digital publishing but there are transferrable skills, such as teamwork and developing creative responses to a brief, that can be used in a wide range of contexts, such as marketing, or in the wider business environment.
