All Learners study the same units in the first year. There are 4 core units:
- Principles and Applications of Applied Science I
- Science Investigation Skills
- Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques
- Laboratory Techniques and their Application
A choice of 2 optional units from below:
- Physiology of Human Body Systems
- Microbiology and Microbiological Techniques
- Electrical Circuits and their Applications
- Genetics and Genetic Engineering
- Human Regulation and Reproduction
- Biological Molecules and Biochemical Processes
In the first year there is an emphasis on building skills, both scientific and professional. You will learn practical skills and how to evaluate and present quality written work whilst adhering to deadlines which prepares you well for university. We also look at universities and ask students to pick a pathway for the second year.
In the second year learners on the Physical Science pathway will study 3 core units and 4 optional units.

Students learn to analyse and critique scientific literature and build on reporting and analysis skills specific to career area.
