Entry requirements

You need to be at least 18 years of age. You need to be employed or working as a volunteer teaching assistant for 6 hours per week. You need to complete a literacy assessment at level 1 to study this qualification.


If you are already working or wish to work in a school supporting teaching and learning, then this course is for you. It is ideal for teaching assistants who are working under the direction of the teacher. The course will enable students to develop the knowledge and skills needed when supporting teaching and learning in the school environment. It is suitable for both employed and voluntary teaching assistants.

You will need to complete units on:

  • Child development
  • Safeguarding the welfare of children
  • Health and safety
  • Behaviour
  • Relationships
  • Equality, diversity and inclusion

You will also study units on schools as organisations, team practice and support learning activities.

  • Assessment Criteria

    You will be appointed an assessor and they will visit you in the workplace to carry out observations of your work. You will also discuss your work as a teaching assistant and complete log sheets. There are also written assignments to complete.

Further information

You may want to progress on to the Level 3 Diploma in Supporting Teaching and Learning course. Typically, you will go on to work in a school as a teaching assistant. You may wish to look for work as a general classroom assistant or as a support assistant for individuals with specific learning needs.
