The Moving Image and Digital Media industry is still one of the largest media sectors in the UK and is still one of the fastest growing. The industry is now even more diverse with the rise of alternative platforms, social media and smaller more agile content creators such as YouTubers. This programme will introduce you to a variety of materials, techniques and processes used in creative media production. You will explore film making, editing, lighting, studio work, location work, multimedia, photography, graphics and idents, and uncover the media industry pathway you wish to follow.

The Media programmes are delivered around our studio and edit suite spaces. Facilities include specialist moving image and audio capture studios, specialist Apple Mac and PC-based editing equipment include Adobe Suite software. All programmes have access to portable location kit such as camera kits, audio kits, grip and lighting kits and students are encouraged to make use of these resources in their own time. Our tutors all have relevant experience of industry bringing a wide range of experience and expertise to the programmes.

Working as part of the Blue Orange learning company you will be taught how to develop your creative ability and professionalism through work on live client briefs, competitions, and the development of digital services for sale. On some projects you may be expected to adopt an industry role. You are encouraged to consider what kind of industry role you might adopt after college or University or consider your own creative business venture.?

Course Content

New BTEC Creative Practice qualifications - continuously assessed (NO exams!) Equivalent to 3 full A levels for the 2-year programme, although students can choose to take Year 1 only.

Focus on developing creative skills, developing own creative practice, working towards a self-devised Final Major Project (FMP) at the end of each year.

Highly practical and progression focused - all assessment is holistic, based on portfolios of work. Evidence is generated through practical projects, briefs, workshops and engagement with the media industry, this prepares learners for progression to the media industry through the development of portfolios and materials for progression.

Light-touch assessment regime - only 4 Units over the 2 year course:

  • -A Exploring and Developing Creative Media Skills (year 1)
    • --A1 Skills Development
    • --A2 Creative Project
  • -B Advancing Creative Practice (year 2)
    • --B1 Personal Progression
    • --B2 Creative Industry Response

Most of the grade is awarded to the FMP Units at the end of year 2 (or year 1 for single-year students).

Common assessment criteria - the same five common assessment criteria are used to assess all work produced throughout the qualification, this simplifies assessment and means that it is clear what learners are expected to do to achieve the criteria:

  • -Informing ideas
  • -Problem solving
  • -Technical skills
  • -Professional practice
  • -Communication
