Course Summary

This qualification is for you if you are a 16-19 year old learner, who wishes to work as an electrician in the building services industry. It has been designed to deliver a high level of occupational skills and provide a platform from which to progress through further learning or into employment. This vocational route at level 3 is a vital step towards becoming a competent electrician.

Where Does It Lead:

This technical qualification focuses on the development of knowledge and practical skills needed for working in the electrotechnical industry, which will prepare you to enter an electrotechnical apprenticeship programme/NVQ. On completion of the Apprenticeship/NVQ, you will be recognised by the industry as competent as an installation or maintenance electrician.

This qualification will prepare you for an electrotechnical apprenticeship/NVQ programme, which fully qualifies you to work as an electrician. The apprenticeship/NVQ will give you an understanding of suitable on-site skills and further knowledge required to work in the electrical industry. Once qualified, there are many further specific and specialised qualifications enhancing skills within the industry, such as electrical design, inspection and testing, appliance safety and environmental technology systems.

Entry Requirement:

Successful completion and end of year report on the Level 2 Electrical Installations course with GCSE Grade 4 in both English and Maths. The Level 3 does not have a direct entry route. All applicants will need to take an English and maths assessment.

The qualification will help you gain an understanding of the skills required within the electrotechnical sector. You will cover compulsory aspects such as:

  • - working safely and effectively
  • - design, construct, test and commission electrical systems
  • - methods of supervision
  • - electrical science and principles
  • - regulations and law
  • - diagnose and repair electrical faults.

NCC works with local employers who will contribute to the knowledge and delivery of training. Employers will provide demonstrations and talks on the industry and where possible work placements will also be provided by the employers.

This practically based training is ideal preparation for gaining employment in the electrotechnical industry or specialist further study.
