Entry requirements

You must have a good standard of education and have passed the level 4 HNC Diploma in Construction.

GCSE English and maths at grade 4 (C) or above, or equivalent level 2 qualifications

An interview may be required before an offer can be made

All students must be employed in a construction role (part-time or full-time) and must be able to prove their employment

Employer references will be obtained prior to a place being offered

Topics

This course will equip you with the skills and knowledge to begin to build your career as a site manager, building surveyor, quantity surveyor, project manager, building engineer or facilities manager. We offer two pathways - the Construction Management or Surveying routes – depending on your area of specialism. Students looking to transfer to the college will need evidence of completed units. This is a classroom-based course.

Example of course modules delivered over two years, dependent on pathway chosen:

  • Unit 14 - Building Information Modelling
  • Unit 15 - Principles of Refurbishment
  • Unit 22 - Group Project (Pearson-set)
  • Unit 23 - Contracts & Management
  • Unit 24 - Project Management
  • Unit 25 - Management of Complex Building Projects
  • Unit 34 - Advanced Quantities for Complex Building Projects
  • Unit 41 - Surveying for Conservation, Renovation & Refurbishment

At the end of the course, students should be able to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding and application of relevant principles relating to modern construction, including: Management of construction works; building information modelling and cost management within the sector.

For part-time students, the course is studied over a period of two years. Attendance is 1 day per week. The course will take place at our Rainham Construction & Engineering Centre.

  • Assessment Criteria

    As this course has been designed with employers in mind, our assessment methods also replicate submissions that extend practical knowledge whilst developing academic understanding. Assessments can be in the form of written academic assignments, reports, presentations, project-based assessments, group or individual presentations, practical demonstrations and recordings. All grades achieved are subject to internal verification, external quality assurance from the awarding body, and internal examination review board.

Further information

On successful completion of the course you may wish to progress to a degree course at university. The HND course can also be used as an entry requirement for professional qualifications, such as those offered by the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT), the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) and the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).
