Entry requirements

A full degree, minimum 2.2 classification in a subject specialist area.

GCSE English and Maths at Grade 4 (C) or above or equivalent Level 2 qualifications.

You will be required to undergo a two-stage interview process.

A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check at a charge of £44.

The Professional Graduate Certificate in Education is a one-year pre-service programme over 32 weeks and is run in partnership with the University of East London (UEL). Over the year you will explore the theoretical, sociological and practical aspects of becoming a good teacher. Whatever your subject specialism, you could pass on your knowledge and expertise to other people.

There are six compulsory modules (programme components), totalling 120 credits. Trainees will be supported in finding a placement within the post-compulsory education and training sector to ensure completion of 100 hours teaching practice over the programme duration. This is a classroom-based course and trainees will attend taught sessions for 10 hours per week.

You will study a selection of modules:

  • Preparing to teach in the lifelong learning sector: classroom practice and craft 15 credits
  • Learner Support in the lifelong learning sector: professional values and sector context 15 credits
  • Assessment and feedback in learning and teaching 15 credits
  • Learning from policies - context and practice 15 credits
  • Active Research Inquiry 30 credits
  • Portfolio of professional development and practice 30 credits

In addition, trainees will need to successfully complete 8 assessed teaching practice sessions against the professional standards for the lifelong learning sector as well as provide the appropriate evidence bundles for these over the year

The full qualification is worth 120 credits.The overall outcome for the course is pass or fail. For full-time students, the course is studied over a period of one academic year. Attendance is 1.5 days per week plus placement. The course will take place at our Ardleigh Green campus.

The Professional Graduate Certificate in Education is for graduates who want a nationally recognised qualification in order to teach in further education and the broader post-compulsory sector (PcET). This course will develop your skills, knowledge and understanding of successful practice in post-compulsory education and your confidence as a professional practitioner. Havering Colleges, New City College is registered with the Office for Students.

  • Assessment Criteria

    Assessment for learning takes place throughout the sessions and is designed to examine students’ understanding of the pedagogy and requirements of summative assignments. There will be formal, or summative, assessment at the end of each module. You will be assessed in all the modules that you study. The programme team has designed a range of assessment methods to test your learning and development as you progress through the programme.

    Assessment will take place during or immediately on completion of the teaching of each module. Assessment will usually involve submitted assignments/in-programme assessments, formal assessments (written, practical, portfolio or oral) or both.

Successful completion of the course leads to the award of the Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PCET) by the University of East London. This course will equip you with the skills and knowledge to pursue a career as a lecturer in a further education setting, teaching lifelong learning and skills-based courses. The course has been designed to meet the requirements of the further education sector industry and is underpinned by the research knowledge and industry experience of our staff. With this qualification you will be trained to teach across a variety of contexts, and will be equipped to find work in settings such as: Colleges of Further Education, Adult Learning Colleges, Prison and Youth Offending Services.
