Mastic Asphalt Apprentices Help Secure Top National Award For Roofing Company

Apprentices who undertook their training at New City College have helped a leading roofing company secure a top national award for their work on renewing the asphalt roofing at London's St Paul's Cathedral.

Sussex Asphalte, who are also marking their 70th anniversary, won the prestigious national award at the UK Roofing Awards in the mastic asphalt award category.

The company undertook works to replenish the gallery by replacing asphalt that was laid over 100 years ago in 1906. The works were completed on time and in phases to enable continued public access to the hugely popular Stone Gallery throughout 2017.

Commenting on the Award, Directors Julian & Matthew Coulter said 'It's great for a local family-owned company to have its craftmanship recognized in this way. For the award to coincide with our 70th anniversary is very special. All of the mastic asphalters who worked on this project achieved the Level 3 NVQ Mastic Asphalt Apprenticeship delivered by New City College at its Hackney campus. It illustrates how important it is to support apprenticeships to sustain our craft".

At 53 meters the Stone Gallery provides some of the best views of the London skyline but its exposure to the elements and deterioration to its surface had allowed water inside the Dome, damaging paintings that depict the life of St Paul.

Formed in 1948 the family-owned company was shortlisted at the 2018 UK Roofing Awards for their work renewing the asphalt to the Stone Gallery that circle's the iconic Dome of St Paul's - the masterpiece of Sir Christopher Wren and one of the most recognizable landmarks in London.

Based in Portslade, Sussex Asphalte employs 30 staff and has a track record of supporting staff through mastic asphalt apprenticeships to achieve a reputation for high-quality work.
