Award-winning hospitality and catering departments set the standards after receiving AA college rosettes

The hospitality and catering teaching teams at New City College's Hackney and Redbridge campuses have been celebrating a double whammy after their departments gained status for delivering excellence in hospitality training and were awarded the prestigious AA college rosette.

People First, who is the sector skills council for catering, inspected the departments, awarding them silver. Silver accreditation demonstrates a department is following a planned course of action to match the development of learners' needs with employers' needs. The aim of this being to create the best outcomes for the students when they complete their course and look for employment.

People First have also joined with AA inspectors, who measure standards in the hospitality industry such as facilities, food, and service, and is a platform to measure industry standards so that customers know what to expect when booking or looking at a restaurant in the AA guide.

New City College Hackney is currently one of four colleges in London whose college restaurant holds AA rosette status. The Redbridge campus, also part of New City College group is another college restaurant to achieve this status, putting New City College down as one of the top colleges in London to study hospitality and catering courses.

Students in the hospitality and catering department work in the colleges Open Kitchen restaurant at Hackney and Rouge at Redbridge giving students first-hand experience of what it's like to work in a busy restaurant environment, preparing them for their next steps should they decide to progress in the industry.

Sharon Sullivan, Group Curriculum Director for Hospitality, Catering & Performing Arts said:

"I am extremely proud of this achievement in such a short space of time since the merger of Hackney Community College and Redbridge College into New City College, which is a positive direction for the group".

Open Kitchen has also been recognized by Time Out, who awarded the restaurant with a Time Out Recommended Award 2017, stating it is the best of its kind in London.

There are many benefits of becoming an accredited college or provider, but most essentially, it brings employers and the provider network together to help raise the professionalism of the industry. For colleges and providers, it means that employers and learners know that your organization is recognized for best practice and excellence in its delivery of training and qualifications in hospitality.
