Students gain a flying start during visit to Stansted Airport to meet awardwinning ground handling agent

A group of keen students, with an interest in aviation careers enjoyed a day working alongside awardwinning ground handling agent, Swissport, as part of an industry day at college.

The students, studying Travel and Tourism and Air Cabin Crew at New City College Epping Forest, spent a day learning about the various career pathways available in the travel and tourism industry.

The schedule involved sampling a variety of interesting functions which take place every day, and students had the opportunity to shadow staff performing their daily duties such as luggage check-in, floor walking and checking in passengers at the gate.

Swissport is one of the largest ground handlers in the world and have won awards worldwide for their excellent customer service in ground handling. Epping Forest have developed links to provide their travel and tourism students with career opportunities, to help them understand their vocation, in a real-life setting.

On the day the students met with ex-students from Epping Forest, who had successfully secured employment with Swissport after completing their Level 3 Extended Diploma in Travel and Tourism, and had been working with Swissport for nearly two years. In this time, they had gained knowledge and experience, and some had even been promoted, which really inspired the students.

The students shadowed Issy Harris and Connie Ellis, amongst others, who completed their Extended Diploma in June 2018. They started working for Swissport in July 2018 and were very happy with their roles as passenger service agents. They spoke to the students about their experience working with Swissport and were happy to have their photos taken.

Simone Butler, Tourism and Aviation Lecturer commented:

We are very proud of our strong links with Swissport and we tailor our courses to meet the demands of the roles that can be found in the aviation industry, so that our students leave the programme equipped with the skills required to make a great start in the industry.

The students enjoyed their visit to the airport to work with Swissport and felt really inspired and motivated by meeting former students working successfully in the industry, who were once on the same study programme as them at college.
