Student lands fantastic work experience opportunity during Learning Disability Work Week

Sheikh Hameed, 18, from Poplar, has spent a week working for the Department for Education in the Director General for Infrastructure and Funding department, as part of Learning Disability Work Week.

Learning Disability Work Week is a campaign organised by Mencap - a UK charity for people with a learning disability. It aims to celebrate and promote what fantastic colleagues people with a learning disability can make in the workplace.

The DfE, passionate about equality and opportunity, arranged through MENCAP for a young person to work with them for a week so that they could gain some experience in the world of work.

The team at DfE developed a programme to help Sheikh practice his IT and design skills in a working environment, while learning some new ones. As part of Sheikh's weeklong placement, he met a range of people in the department, including a visit to the Permanent Secretary's Office, Jonathan Slater. Jonathan commented:

"I hope that Sheikh enjoyed his time with us and I know there's much that the team can learn from him. It's a great example of us working directly with young people, and I'd love to see us do more of this."

Sue Meakin, Sheikh's manager said:

"I wanted to say thank you once again for being such a great team member during the week. I think your enthusiasm and willingness to try many new things was absolutely fantastic. The presentation you did on Friday to a number of colleagues was brilliant!"
