Serving bold, big-hearted flavours from a collaborative kitchen of student and professional chefs, OKN1 will open on June 19.
Born from a love of food, Hackney and learning, OKN1 (previously Open Kitchen) was created to connect promising student chefs with like-minded professionals and open up New City College Hackney to inspirational opportunities in the hospitality world.
OKN1 will give NCC students the opportunity for paid work and to build a professional network while they train. Created in collaboration with Des McDonald Associates Concept Design, an exceptional standard is promised. Des says, 'The team and I are super excited to develop this project with New City College Hackney: we have some really smart students in the team who will be stars for the future.'
Gerry McDonald, NCC Group Principal and CEO, comments on this significant investment from the college,
With OKN1, we're introducing something bold and innovative for Hackney and London. Our students will get a true head start to their careers, working alongside experienced, dynamic professionals in a restaurant of real note.
As for the food, expect dialled up flavours and a real respect for ingredients: from flatbreads with flat-iron chicken, 24-hour onions and Marmite butter (£7) to spiced squash hummus, whipped buffalo ricotta and pumpkin seed dishes (£6) and hearty grills with bold sides come evening time: like Suffolk bacon chop with fried egg and devilled sauce (£15) with chicken-salt chips (£3) and charred broccoli with anchovy and pine nuts (£4).
The sweet-toothed are also in luck with an all-day bakery counter serving classic cakes and brownies and an original afters menu with East-End honey parfait, raspberries and toasted oats (£5), Butlers gin-sour doughnuts (£4) and chocolate Eton Mess sundaes.
Imaginative craft cocktails and low-alcohol varieties will make the grade too - ideal for sipping on OKN1's generous, sun-drenched terrace, which overlook the college gardens.
With an attitude of constant learning, OKN1 will be hosting collaborations, residencies and events in partnership with chefs and brands who share their affinity for craft and community.
