A hairdressing student from New City College proved she has the talent to reach the top, when she beat off the competition at a regional heat that can lead to securing her a place on the UK's World Skills team.
Manushaqe Xhaferi, who is studying hairdressing at the college's Redbridge campus on Chadwell Heath, secured first place at the VTCT UK Skills heats, held at Portsmouth College.
She faced competition from ten other hair and beauty students from further education colleges across the UK.
The heat required the students to create a hairstyle and cut specified by the UK Skills team judges, and introduce their own colour choice to compliment the cut.
The judges awarded Manushaqe top points for her cutting, colouring and hair design skills making her first in the heats.
Senior Curriculum Manager, Hairdressing at the New City College Redbridge campus said:
This is a fantastic achievement and we are really proud of all of our students who took part. Each year we enter our hairdressing students to the UK Skills competition and it was fantastic that three of them made it to the heats and all finished so strongly.
Two theatrical make-up students from the college also took part and secured second and third place finishes respectively.
Daisy Carter came second and Astrid Graban third, for their body painting and make-up skills in a competition themed 'All of the Elements.' Daisy chose earth and Astrid chose water as their make-up themes.
Having progressed through two heats, Manushaqe now has the agonising wait to hear if her scores are good enough to get her a place in the next round, ultimately leading up to the national final.
This will take place at the NEC Birmingham in November, where the national finalists across a number of skills sectors, will compete to secure coveted places in the UK's team for next year's World Skills final.
