Celebration Time As Fantastic Tower Hamlets College Students Bask In The Spotlight At Gala Awards Evening

High achieving students at New City College's Tower Hamlets campus came together at their student achievement awards evening last night, where they received their individual awards and enjoyed the recognition of their success in front of an audience of proud family members and teaching staff.

21 awards were presented on the evening at the event held at the college's Poplar High Street campus. The awards represented each curriculum area of the college as well as two special Deputy Principal Awards.

Special guest speakers Sadat Rashid and Maria Ampon spoke passionately about how their teachers helped them focus and encouraged them on to a successful future. Sadat now works for a leading aerospace technology firm and Maria works at KPMG, who praised her tutor for the opportunities she gave her as a student at the college.

Mr Jorge Castillo-Rodriguez, Deputy Principal at New City College Tower campus said:

I feel very privileged and honoured to acknowledge the achievements of our brilliant students who have made the college, our teachers, their parents and guardians very proud.

You are truly role models for your peers and the next generation of students entering New City College Tower Hamlets.

Every student was a winner on the evening and particular highlights included:

Lapaz Copus, winner of the A Level student of the year. Lapaz has an unconventional background, being a home-schooled student. She consistently attained high grades on her course and produced exemplary pieces of homework. She has participated in extracurricular activities, which included a mock murder trial at the Supreme Court of Justice and also represented the college at Parliament in a mock House of Commons debate and has also served as a buddy mentor helping new students to acclimatize to the rigours of A Level study and life at the college's Attlee A Level Academy.

Jainaba Sanneh, winner of the business studies student of the year. Jainaba has progressed on her business advanced diploma very quickly due to her hard work and dedication, and will leave with D*D*D*, the highest grade in the class. She has worked as a mentor, supporting a group of BTEC Level 2 students, and has also worked as a student ambassador, representing the college.

Uzair Fadia, winner of English and communications student of the year. He started his English classes a very quiet and shy student who found it challenging to participate in speaking activities. Through hard work, dedication, excellent attendance, and of course, plenty of talking, Uzair has now come out of his shell and is able to openly share his opinions in classroom discussions. He successfully passed his speaking and listening exam this year.

Rory Patrick, winner of the Higher Education student of the year. Rory, as a mature student, came to the college with little study skills and basic proficiency in literacy. He has proven to be an outstanding, dedicated and high achieving student while studying on the Access to Health Professions programme. He responded so well to constructive feedback to improve dramatically and achieve merit and distinction grades.

Ome Azad, winner of the SEND student of the year award. Ome has always been a very dedicated and committed student, taking his studies and development very seriously. He has successfully completed internship roles in catering at both Premier Inn and popular sandwich retailer Subway. In both positions he was complemented by customers and management for his hard work and newly-acquired skills. Ome is currently working at Subway where he is a popular member of the team.

The Deputy Principal's Team Award went to the Café 24 and Café 25 students, who have been running the colleges Canary View restaurant 2 days a week. The students have had a willingness to learn and showed enthusiasm in their working environment. They have catered for various events throughout the year including the CEO Gerry McDonald's corporate lunches, staff birthday lunches and for the launch of the plans for the rebuilding of the Tower Hamlets campus.
