A young basketball starlet from Hackney is about to live his dreams with a move to America this September.
Aaron Badibo, 19, is joining one of America's top basketball colleges, Sheridan College, Wyoming, where he will have the chance to play for their college team the Generals.
An award-winning player during his time at New City College's Hackney Campus, Aaron was encouraged to apply by his coaches for a scholarship.
He prepared a tape of his basketball career at New City College, including highlights of game action and the details of the awards he has won, including being AoC sports player of the year, ABL Southern Conference player of the year, ABL Southern Conference Most Valuable player and the New City College Hackney campus sports student of the year.
Sheridan College were impressed and awarded him one of their 12 scholarship places for overseas students.
Aaron, who studied sports at New City College, will study general studies at Sheridan, allowing him to take courses across multiple faculties and prepare for a transfer to a university in the US, most likely in South Dakota.
Speaking ahead of his move to the US, Aaron said:
I am so grateful to my teachers and coaches for pushing me to get to where I am now. Their advice and encouragement has helped to develop my game and continually improve to be the best player that I can be. New City College's partnership with the London Lions has provided me with more exposure to the professional basketball world and that is now my dream to become a professional player.
Lisa Coles, Deputy Principal, New City College Hackney campus said:
It has been Aaron's aim to become a professional player and his commitment and hard work has helped him to achieve the next step on his journey. To secure one of the 12 overseas scholarships is so impressive and we are all so proud that he is the first Hackney student to secure such a scholarship.
