Fabrication and Welding Practice (Level 3 Diploma)

Five or more GCSEs at Grades 9 - 4 including:

• Average GCSE point score of 3.5 or above
• GCSE English Language and maths at Grade 4
• GCSE English Language and maths at Grade 4
• Progression from Level 2 with Merit or Distinction, or equivalent
• Aptitude tests may be required in certain subjects such as catering, sport and hairdressing

The ABC Level 3 Certificate/Diploma in Fabrication and Welding Practice is suitable for a wide range of students, for example the self-employed, adults wishing to specialise by pursuing single units and young people who are either school leavers or new to the industry. The course is a good progression route from the Level 1 and Level 2 Fabrication and Welding qualifications. It aims to provide students with an opportunity to acquire the appropriate practical skills and knowledge required for the workplace or to go on to higher education courses.

This course has been developed in conjunction with industry experts and the units studied are a step up from the ABC Level 2 Certificate. The overall aim of the qualification is to raise a student’s skill level and enhance their underpinning knowledge to promote progression from basic welding and fabrication skills to a more highly developed understanding of equipment functions and how materials behave when subjected to the welding process. The course will educate the student to correctly observe the safe procedures that are paramount in the welding and fabrication industry.

You can expect to study:

• Materials, Science and Calculations for Fabrication and Welding Practice – this unit is mandatory and is externally assessed
• Manual Metal-Arc Welding - optional unit
• Metal-Arc Gas Shielded Welding - optional unit
• Tungsten-Arc Gas Shielded (all Vertical) Welding - optional unit
• Fabrication Processes – Plate - optional unit
• Fabrication Processes - Sheet Metal - optional unit

Students choose three from the five optional units. The qualification includes the latest fabrication and welding techniques, materials, processes and practices, and units are assessed in line with industry demands, which include updated rigorous practical assessments and online multiple-choice exams.
