Course information

If you have an interest in your surroundings and often think of new ways of approaching space to create better environments; if you look around with a creative eye and implement changes to your home, perhaps you should consider a career in interior and architectural design. On this course you will explore elements of 3D interior space and architectural design through model-making and design drawing. You will work with digital processes, including Archicad, Sketchup and Laser cutting. Prior knowledge of any of these is helpful, but not essential.

The Interior and Architectural Design two-year A Level suits people with an interest in Architectural 3D space. You should have 3D problem-solving abilities and an interest in using 2D and 3D materials in a practical way. In the lower sixth you will cover perspective drawing, model making, design ideas, drawing and Computer Aided Design. A range of different projects are covered and all conclude with a 3D model outcome.

You can expect to:
  • Research and explore the work of contemporary designers
  • Make models using resistant materials and develop 3D representational skills
  • Visit contemporary buildings and spaces
  • Design an interior space using a selection of furniture
  • Create accurate CAD plans
The upper sixth year includes a personal project for which students write their own brief and this forms a key element in support of their application to university to study architecture or interior design degrees. Students are also required to produce a 2,500-word written study that connects in with their chosen coursework project. This A Level is studied alongside two or three other A Levels or Level 3 BTEC equivalents. Other Creative Arts faculty subjects combine well.
