To achieve the Award, students must produce a portfolio of evidence showing that they have gained the six credits and have covered an introduction to counselling and the development of skills associated with counselling.

The modules cover areas such as:

  • Know the issues for which people seek counselling
  • Understand the skills used by counsellors
  • Be able to demonstrate empathy when using counselling skills
  • Be able to observe boundaries when using counselling skills
  • Recognise and respond appropriately to different emotions displayed
  • Manage own emotions and prejudices so that the person being helped is not adversely affected

The course is run twice a year, and students can enrol to study either from September to January, or from March to June.
