Entry requirements

Grade 3 in GCSE English Language or Functional Skills 2 and pass initial assessment.

Topics

The aim of the course is to give students the knowledge, understanding and skills required to be able to draw upon a range of texts as reading stimulus and engage with creative, as well as other texts, such as non-fiction, reviews and journalism. Students will have opportunities to develop higher-order reading and critical thinking skills that encourage genuine enquiry into different topics and themes. They will be encouraged to read fluently and write effectively with correct grammar and punctuation.

You will learn how to:

  • Read and evaluate texts critically and make comparisons between texts
  • Summarise information or ideas from texts
  • Use knowledge gained from wide reading to inform and improve your own writing
  • Write effectively and coherently using English appropriately
  • Use grammar and punctuation correctly and spell accurately
  • Acquire and apply a wide vocabulary to your writing and spoken language
  • Listen to and understand spoken language
  • Present information and ideas, selecting and organising it effectively and persuasively for prepared spoken presentations

Students should read and will be assessed on high-quality, challenging texts across a range of genres and types, including literature and extended literary non-fiction, and other writing such as essays, reviews and journalism (both printed and online). These should support students in developing their own writing.

This GCSE English course is run over one evening per week and will enable students of all abilities to develop the skills they need to read, understand and analyse a wide range of different texts covering the 19th, 20th and 21st century time periods as well as to write clearly, coherently and accurately using a range of vocabulary and sentence structures.

Further information

With a combination of other GCSEs at grade 4/5 and above, successful students will be able to progress onto Level 3 courses, such as A Levels, BTECs and GNVQs.
