Entry requirements

Learners must be at least 16 years old. An interest in Counselling, and adequate written and oral communication skills are required. Learners do not need to be working or undertaking practical placements to take this qualification. Learners need to attend an interview with the programme team.

Course information

This qualification prepares learners for further learning and training whilst developing an understanding of Counselling Skills. This Level 1 Award consists of two mandatory units. These are: Introducing Counselling Skills (which, when achieved, is worth three credits); and Using Counselling Skills to Help Others (which is also worth three credits). To achieve the Award, students must produce a portfolio of evidence showing that they have gained the six credits and have covered an introduction to counselling and the development of skills associated with counselling.

The modules cover areas such as:

  • Know the issues for which people seek counselling
  • Understand the skills used by counsellors
  • Be able to demonstrate empathy when using counselling skills
  • Be able to observe boundaries when using counselling skills
  • Recognise and respond appropriately to different emotions displayed
  • Manage own emotions and prejudices so that the person being helped is not adversely affected

    This qualification is aimed at a range of learners who would like to develop the basic skills of Counselling.

  • How you are assessed

    This qualification will be internally assessed using a range of methods, which could include written assignments or tasks such as presenting information or role-play.
