Entry requirements

  • Appropriate accredited Level 3 qualifications (for example A-levels or vocational qualifications.
  • All students will be expected to have GCSE maths and English Language qualifications at grade C or above (grade 4 on new framework).
  • A minimum age of 18 years is a requirement.
  • Be working as a teaching assistant or at least 10 hours per week.
  • Have experience of working as a teaching assistant within an educational setting.
  • Have a letter of support from your Headteacher.
  • You must have a current enhanced DBS check.
  • Successful completion of interview.

    Course Details

    The Foundation Degree in Education Studies for Teaching Assistants is a two-year course for experienced teaching assistants wishing to study at a higher educational level. This course is for teaching assistants or learning and inclusion support assistants in all areas of teaching: early years, primary schools, secondary schools, special schools and post-16 teaching.

    The course covers all aspects of the work of the teaching assistant: the ways children develop and learn; appropriate and inclusive teaching methods; supporting learners with additional needs; social and emotional issues and contexts in learning; policy and legislation. New City College is registered with the Office for Students.

    Course Structure

    All of the modules on this course are compulsory and worth either 20 or 40 credits each. Successful completion of all of the modules in the first year is worth 120 credits at Level 4 and equivalent to a Certificate of Higher Education. Successful completion of the second year is also worth 120 credits and will lead to the award of the Level 5 Foundation Degree.

    Further information

    Many students use the Foundation Degree as a route into teaching. You obtain 240 credits and need to obtain a further 120 credits to obtain a full degree. You may wish to study the BA in Education and Professional Practice at our college after the Foundation Degree for one year, and then complete a primary PGCE or possibly gain a place on the Schools Direct programme.
