Applied Science and Technology (Level 1)

Course Overview

Entry requirements

Three or more GCSEs at Grade 2 including:

  • GCSE English Language and maths at Grade 2 (or equivalent)
  • Successful completion of Entry 3, and appropriate recommendation report

Course information

This is a portfolio-based one-year Level 1 course. It is a very practical qualification with plenty of opportunities to implement the theory that you learn in your lessons. The units studied will be assessed through coursework, which gives you a clear understanding of your progress through the course. Taught by subject specialists with laboratory experience, the qualification involves completing laboratory-based practical assignments, self-study assignments (with support) and presentations that are based on real workplace situations. You will also study Maths and English alongside this Level 1 course.

The aim of the course is to develop your knowledge and understanding in Physics, Biology and Chemistry whilst improving your vocational practical skills. You will learn how to follow scientific procedures in a logical and safe manner, observe and record data accurately (using ICT where possible), and present information concisely to enable others to successfully complete the same investigation/practical experiment, safely. Level 1 academic study is just below Level 2 (GCSE) Level.
