It All Adds Up – students’ powerful animation shows the reality of racism in England

An animation highlighting the reality of life for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) young people in England has been launched across the country.

Titled It All Adds Up, the animation was created by the Student Commission on Racial Justice and shows a day in the life of four young people as they go about their normal business and encounter racism from the police, employers, healthcare services and in education.

The Student Commission on Racial Justice is a partnership involving students from 10 further education colleges – including New City College – who have been recruited by the Leaders Unlocked programme.

The students made the animation because they want to bring the voice of thousands of young people to the debate about race equality in England. They are developing recommendations for change that will be delivered to decision-makers on June 17^th 2021.

One of the students involved, Yasmin, 18, said: “I have loved being able to see our animation develop into something really amazing. This project has only increased my want to change things in society and it has made me more driven to do so. Before the project I might have witnessed injustices and decided to look on, but now I am determined to help people be free from racial injustices.”
