Entry requirements

English Language grade 4, Maths grade 5, Combined Science grades 4-5, plus one other subject at grade 4. Successful completion of the Applied Science Foundation Diploma in the first year at Merit or above.


The aim of the course is to give you the knowledge, understanding and skills that you need to prepare for further study or employment in Applied Sciences. As well as theoretical and practical assignments, you will be expected to contribute to group discussions within the classroom. On successful completion of the two years, you can progress to employment, an apprenticeship or further study in Applied Sciences or a related subject area.

This course is a two-year BTEC Extended Diploma and is equivalent to 3 A Levels, attracting the same UCAS points. It is designed to provide a work-related qualification in a range of vocational Applied Science sectors and it is a practical-based course with plenty of opportunities to implement the theory that is learned over the two years. Units are assessed through exams and coursework, giving the student a clear understanding of their progress. Taught by subject specialists with laboratory experience, the qualification involves completing laboratory-based practical assignments, self-study assignments and presentations that are based on real workplace situations.

Further information

You could progress onto one of our Level 4 courses in a related field or pursue a degree course at university. Former students have progressed onto a variety of Higher Education courses including: Marine Biology, Biology, Genetics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Nursing, Biomedicine, Criminology, Nutrition, Pharmaceutical Science and related Science degrees. Employment opportunities may include a career within forensic science, laboratory assistant, medical technician and many more.
