Entry requirements

You need to be at least 18 years of age to study this qualification and currently employed or working as a volunteer teaching assistant for a minimum of 6 hours per week. All students will also be required to complete a literacy assessment at Level 1 prior to enrolment.

Course information

The Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning has been designed to provide learners with an understanding of the knowledge and skills needed when working directly with children and young people in school or college environments.

It covers a wide range of areas including children and young people's development, supporting children and young people's positive behaviour and communication and professional relationships. It is aimed at learners working in roles that support pupils' learning in primary, secondary, as well as colleges.

Essential Digital Skills in Education 

You will also be given an opportunity to gain an extra qualification in digital skills alongside your vocational course. An extra hour will be provided to support you with these skills. This course will cover areas such as:

  • how to use your phone, laptop or PC
  • how to solve simple technical problems
  • how to create documents including images and video
  • how to use online communication such as e-mail, social media or video calls (e.g. Zoom)
  • how to use software programmes such as Edexcel 
  • how to stay safe online
  • How you are assessed

    You will be required to produce a personal portfolio of evidence demonstrating your understanding and competence in practice of the learning outcomes of the Level 2 qualification. You will attend a work placement to gain real work experience and be ass

    All units will be internally assessed using a range of methods which could include: observations of practice, written assignments or tasks such as designing a leaflet or creating a power point presentation.

What Can This Course Lead To

On completion of this course, you may want to progress on to the Level 3 Diploma in Supporting Teaching and Learning course. Typically, students will go on to work in a school as a teaching assistant.
