We have a strong network of advice and support at the college to help students with their individual needs:
Careers and Employability
Our professional careers advisors are on hand to give advice and guidance on courses. They are available at open days, advice and interview evenings and during enrolment.
Personal tutors are assigned to all students at New City College Hackney, and we work closely with the student to set challenging targets and to support them in reaching their potential.
Student Advisors and Counsellors
Our student advisors give advice on finance, bursaries, legal matters, benefits, immigration and other welfare and personal issues. They can also advise on childcare support.
Mental Health Support
Our award winning team helps people to access education and training and works with course teams to make sure everyone gets the support they need.
Our peer mentoring programme is designed to help students realise their potential through ongoing support, advice and encouragement from a role model. Students meet with their mentor on a weekly basis to help develop their skills and attitudes to succeed in achieving their career goals.
Funds are allocated to students needing support with materials and other educational costs. These include the 16-18 bursary, the college’s 19+ bursary and the bursary for students taking out an advanced learning loan. We also provide free school meals for eligible students.
Inclusion and Learning Support
We understand that some students may need a bit of extra support from time to time to meet the demands of their course, with many students benefiting from tailored learning support. We can provide support:
- In small groups at our study skills centre
- On a 1:1 basis
This will help develop:
- English language and/or literacy skills
- Maths/numeracy skills (up to Level 2)
- Study skills/time management
- Emotional well-being
Students can also get personalised support if you have dyslexia, dyscalculia or dyspraxia, a medical condition, sensory impairment, learning or physical disability.
Study Skills Drop-In Centre
Our drop-in centre helps students in their studies and works with their teachers to embed support into their lessons. Support focuses on:
- English and maths
- Key skills portfolios
- Basic computer skills
- 1:1 dyslexia support and access to assistive technology (by appointment only)
