14-16 Students

Courses and support for young people aged 14-16

Study programmes for students aged 14-16

Our curriculum for 14 to 16-year-old students offers a personalised education suited to individual levels of ability and need. All classes take place at our Arbour Square campus in Tower Hamlets or at our Ardleigh Green campus in Havering.

Students are able to study core subjects, including English, Maths and Science as well as other GCSE subjects. The courses available will depend on which campus the student attends. Our experienced teachers assess students when they first join us and plan the most appropriate level of education.

Students can also study vocational qualifications at Level 1 and Level 2. There is very good progression to A Levels and vocational subjects at Level 3.

  • Havering 14-16 - Information for students and parents

Some young people aged 14-16 may find mainstream education difficult to engage with for a variety of reasons. To enable these young people to access some form of education, New City College offers bespoke learning programmes to meet their needs.

We work closely with schools, parents, carers and other external agencies to create a study programme to provide a positive learning experience for these young people.  The study programmes focus on job-related learning, which for some students is the key to their future success and re-engagement with education. Other courses, such as Applied Science and Health & Social Care are also focused on providing progression to higher level courses and university.

Each study programme will typically consist of one main vocational subject alongside English and Maths. In English and Maths we offer GCSE or Functional Skills, however, the level of entry will be determined by the results of a skills assessment conducted prior to enrolment. The current list of vocational courses we offer is below but, as with English and Maths, an assessment may be required for Level 2 courses.

    Available Courses at Havering:

Entry Level: Foundation Learning and ESOL

Level 1:  Applied Science, Art & Design, Beauty, Business, Childcare, Construction, Hairdressing, Health & Social Care, IT, Mechanical Engineering, Motor Vehicle Body Repair, Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Plumbing.

Level 2: Electrical Engineering, Media, Music, Performing Arts, Public Services, Sport, Travel & Tourism

The college environment is vastly different from school, not least because there is a wider variety of courses to choose from. Classes are taught in specialist learning facilities, by industry-experienced teachers, and students will be expected to be more independent in their learning. The 14-16 year-old students are treated the same as any other student and will be expected to follow the same rules and procedures. It is for this reason that not every young person we meet is ready, able or willing to undertake courses at the college and where this is the case, these students will be referred back to their respective school or local authority.

If your child is in Year 10 or 11 and is interested in exploring this offer, you must speak with your school first, as in many cases the school will be responsible for funding these opportunities. If your child is home educated, then please contact your local Home Education Advisor or call us on the number below as entry routes will differ.

If you are a parent, carer or a teacher and wish to find out more about the 14-16 offer at our Havering campus, please call a member of the team on 01708 462893.
