A Level students unlock literary treasures at the British Library

A group of A Level English Literature students stepped beyond the classroom and into the pages of history with an inspiring visit to the British Library in London.

The students, from New City College Havering Sixth Form, travelled to the capital for a day immersed in some of the most significant literary and historical treasures in the world. From the moment they entered the Library’s renowned Treasures Gallery, they were face-to-face with documents that have shaped culture, politics and story-telling for centuries.

Among the highlights were First Folio by William Shakespeare, personal letters and drafts by Jane Austen, and even the historic Magna Carta. Seeing these original texts up close gave students a powerful sense of connection to the writers and the moments that they have studied in class.

To make the experience even more engaging, students took part in a “treasure hunt” around the collection, encouraging them to find and look closely at key documents. The activity brought their A Level studies to life in a memorable way.

In the afternoon, the group participated in a thought-provoking workshop, Exploring Black British Literature, led by published authors. The session offered fresh perspectives and encouraged students to think critically about voice, identity and representation in literature – themes that resonate strongly within their current studies.

Julie Hyland, Subject Leader for English Literature at Havering Sixth Form, said the trip was an invaluable extension of classroom learning. “Experiencing these texts in person helps students to appreciate their historical and cultural importance in a completely different way. The workshop also provided an exciting opportunity for active learning and discussion.”

Students described the day as both “interesting” and “enjoyable”, particularly praising the interactive elements of the visit.

They were also keen to praise their English Literature course, particularly highlighting the quality of teaching. One student said: “In the classroom it works really well because lessons are interactive and thought-provoking, and you can tell the teachers are genuinely enthusiastic about what they’re teaching. I genuinely enjoy studying this A Level.”
