Bricklaying students gain valuable experience on live construction site

Students from New City College’s Construction and Engineering Campus in Rainham have taken their learning beyond the classroom with an exciting visit to a housing development being built by Bellway.

The group of 10 Level 1 Bricklaying students were welcomed to Bellway’s Roe Wood Park site in Havering, where they were given an eye-opening introduction into the fast-paced world of construction.

The visit forms part of New City College’s commitment to providing students with hands-on, industry-focused experiences that enhance their studies and prepare them for future careers.

During the trip, students met Bellway Senior Site Manager David Barden and Site Manager David Hodby as well as contractors from GSQ Brickwork. They heard first-hand about the day-to-day realities of working on a large-scale building project, before heading out on a guided tour of the site.

Kitted out in hard hats and high-visibility vests, the students explored the development and saw how their classroom and brick workshop learning translates into a real working environment. They also had the opportunity to practise their bricklaying skills on site, gaining practical experience under expert guidance.

The Roe Wood Park development in Harold Hill has a special connection to New City College, as it is being built on the former Havering College Quarles campus site. The merger with NCC and subsequent redevelopment of the site has helped fund the state-of-the-art construction and engineering facilities in Rainham.

Jane Nugent, Work Related Curriculum Advisor at New City College, said the experience had a significant impact on the students. She said: “Hearing directly from the Bellway and GSQ Brickwork professionals and seeing a live site in action has given our students a much deeper understanding of the industry and has inspired them to think about their future careers.”

Bellway’s David Barden said: “It was a pleasure to welcome this group of students to our housing development. Bellway is focused on providing opportunities for young people to gain the skills and experience they need to progress in their careers, and on developing the skilled workforce we need as a business now and in the future.”

At New City College, construction students benefit from a well-rounded learning experience that combines classroom teaching, practical workshop training and industry exposure. Visits and work placements ensure students not only build technical skills, but they also gain confidence and connections within the sector.
