Business students inspired by cycling project on incredible trip to the Netherlands

New City College Business students recently returned from a fantastic visit to a Dutch college where they worked in collaboration on a sustainability-focused project for a Skills Competition.

The five students, all studying Level 3 BTEC Business at either Redbridge or Havering Sixth Form campus, said the trip opened their eyes to a different culture and has helped their personal development as well as increased their communication, research and analysis skills.

The visit, fully funded by the Turing Scheme, was arranged through a partnership with the Koning Willem I College (KWIC) in the town of ‘s-Hertogenbosch. Students from both colleges worked together on a sustainability project where they researched and proposed innovative ways to make cycling a more attractive mode of transport in London. Their studies focused on how riding a bike improves vitality as well as individual and community well-being.

Beyond the challenging academic work, the students also had the chance for some sightseeing and to explore the picturesque town of ‘s-Hertogenbosch, immersing themselves in Dutch culture, while building friendships with their counterparts from the Netherlands.

Redbridge Campus student Zanetta-Marie Noreiga said the experience to travel to other parts of the world and meet people from other cultures was an opportunity she wouldn’t forget.

She said: “I really enjoyed the trip and found working with other students on the project was fun. It has definitely improved my organisational skills and teamwork. One of the main things I loved was the chance to make lasting friendships with people from a different country. I hope that others have the opportunity to travel and take part in projects like this.”

The trip provided invaluable learning opportunities, enhancing students’ skills in:

  • International Collaboration – working effectively in multi-cultural teams to reflect real-world business environments
  • Research and Analysis – developing primary and secondary research strategies, including data processing and using digital tools
  • Communication – listening to other people’s ideas and opinions, questioning techniques and giving presentations
  • Proposal Development – formulating creative, evidence-based recommendations to action in real workplace scenarios
  • Sustainability Awareness – understanding the benefits of cycling and effectively advocating for its wider adoption

Mahnaz Asgari Joorshari, NCC Deputy Group Curriculum Director for Business, said the initiative had been highly beneficial for the students.

She said: “At New City College, we go above and beyond to ensure our students are ready for their future and this unforgettable trip gave them hands-on experience and the chance to foster skills that are crucial for success in today’s jobs market.

“The students’ feedback has been incredible. They were inspired by the infrastructure and lifestyle of the Netherlands and they not only improved their social, communication and presentation abilities but also developed cultural awareness, critical thinking, and time management skills.

“It’s clear that this partnership with KWIC is giving students the tools they need to think outside the box, explore new opportunities and be successful in their future careers.

“A huge thank you to our hosts in the Netherlands for their warm hospitality and to NCC’s international department, particularly Angie Portero, for making this trip such a success.

“And we’re delighted that the collaboration will continue! In May 2025, the Dutch students will travel to London to continue their research and work alongside the New City College students again to finalise their project, before presenting it in the Skills Competition.

“At New City College, we’re dedicated to shaping future leaders, and this is just the beginning!”
