New City College Business students recently returned from a fantastic visit to a Dutch college where they worked in collaboration on a sustainability-focused project for a Skills Competition.
The five students, all studying Level 3 BTEC Business at either Redbridge or Havering Sixth Form campus, said the trip opened their eyes to a different culture and has helped their personal development as well as increased their communication, research and analysis skills.
The visit, fully funded by the Turing Scheme, was arranged through a partnership with the Koning Willem I College (KWIC) in the town of ‘s-Hertogenbosch. Students from both colleges worked together on a sustainability project where they researched and proposed innovative ways to make cycling a more attractive mode of transport in London. Their studies focused on how riding a bike improves vitality as well as individual and community well-being.
Beyond the challenging academic work, the students also had the chance for some sightseeing and to explore the picturesque town of ‘s-Hertogenbosch, immersing themselves in Dutch culture, while building friendships with their counterparts from the Netherlands.
Redbridge Campus student Zanetta-Marie Noreiga said the experience to travel to other parts of the world and meet people from other cultures was an opportunity she wouldn’t forget.
She said: “I really enjoyed the trip and found working with other students on the project was fun. It has definitely improved my organisational skills and teamwork. One of the main things I loved was the chance to make lasting friendships with people from a different country. I hope that others have the opportunity to travel and take part in projects like this.”
