Architecture students shaping safer cities for women and girls

A group of A Level Interior and Architectural Design students from New City College Havering Sixth Form had the incredible opportunity to attend a thought-provoking workshop at the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), which explored how urban environments could be designed to help women feel safer.

The 20 students were invited to RIBA’s ‘Designing the City for Women and Girls’ workshop – an inspiring event that focused on the role of architecture and design in built-up areas.

The workshop encouraged the students to think critically about safety in urban areas, asking them to reflect on which spaces made them feel secure and why.

Responses were varied and insightful, sparking meaningful discussion and creativity. Working with RIBA professionals, students then produced visual collages – blending imagery, ideas and plans to portray how design can impact female safety.

A Level Interior and Architectural Design teacher Ellie Smith said: “We were incredibly proud of our students who attended the workshop. Many of them stood up to speak confidently on behalf of their groups, and several were interviewed by RIBA after the session, showing just how engaged and articulate they were.”

Ellie added: “We’re incredibly grateful to RIBA for the invitation and the experience. It’s exciting to see our students contribute to such an important dialogue, and to watch them rise to the occasion so brilliantly.”

Those selected to attend the inspiring day had demonstrated excellent studentship at New City College, and the insight they gained will directly inform their A Level course projects next year.

The experience will also help them stand out when applying to universities as the event has developed their ability to think critically, engage with current issues and work collaboratively on professional briefs.
