Former Principal takes Chair Emeritus role at NCC’s Teaching and Learning Lab

Highly-respected former Principal at New City College, Janet Smith, says she is honoured to accept the position of Chair Emeritus at NCC’s pioneering Teaching and Learning Lab.

Janet, who retired as Principal of Havering Sixth Form and Ardleigh Green campuses, in July 2026, was instrumental in creating the ‘nation-first’ Lab in 2023, along with Ruth Kendrick, NCC Group Director for Teaching, Learning and Development.

Ruth said: “Janet’s innovative drive to improve teaching and learning through evidence-informed practice has established us as a sector-informing institution. Her leadership, insight and passion continue to inspire our team and we are delighted to maintain her guidance in this new capacity.”

Janet said: “The work of New City College’s Teaching and Learning Lab continues to explore and develop new ways of working in the Further Education sector. Its innovative approach to engaging practitioners in creating new knowledge and using evidence-based practice has improved the learning experience for students and teachers alike.

“I am honoured and delighted to be able to continue to support the Lab in my new role as Chair Emeritus and I look forward to continuing being part of its evolution.”
