Met Police visit gives Public Services students career inspiration

Students had the chance to discover the huge variety of careers within the police force during a hands-on visit from the Met Police.

Officers from specialist units including the Mounted Branch, Marine Policing, Territorial Support Group, Traffic Division and Armed Response (authorised firearms officers) took along their vehicles, equipment and horses, giving demonstrations and talks to Public Services students at New City College Havering Sixth Form Campus.

The students were able to handle and try on tactical gear, meet the police horses and their handlers, examine motorcycle technology and get expert advice on how to pursue a career in policing.

The event built on the success of last year’s popular visit, bringing new insights and interactive elements that the students appreciated. They were able to gain valuable knowledge about the different police divisions, the work they do, how they keep communities safe and the equipment they use.

As always, the opportunity to interact with the Met’s horses was a highlight for many.

Student feedback was overwhelmingly positive. One student said: “Seeing all the different units and learning how each plays a role in public safety was fascinating. It definitely made me more interested in joining the police and was really motivating.”

Public Services teacher Mark Brooks said: “This event has once again provided our students with an invaluable experience. It goes beyond the classroom and gives them a real sense of what a future in public service might look like. Huge thanks to the Met Police for making this possible.”
