NCC Goes Green – students and staff pledge to create a greener future

New City College held an action-packed Green Week with engaging activities for students and staff – all designed to raise awareness of environmental issues and climate change.

Called NCC Goes Green 2025, the campaign called for everyone to take action towards creating a greener lifestyle and to pledge practical everyday changes in order to protect our planet.

From thought-provoking discussions to pop-up charity shops, the college community at all campuses came together and got involved. Students and staff proudly shared their personal pledges on how they plan to reduce their carbon footprint and everyone was encouraged to create change for the future.

The week featured a wide range of eco-activities, including:

  • Interactive pledge walls
  • Sustainability information galleries
  • Clothes donation stations, swap shops, and recycled fashion rails
  • Crafting workshops using recycled materials – from paper bead bracelets to plastic bottle bird-feeders
  • Tote bag making from old T-shirts
  • Virtual Reality sessions and a student-led presentation on fast fashion awareness
  • Litter picks and a recycle bin design challenge
  • Themed book displays, origami and carbon footprint trackers

One of the week’s highlights was the launch of an exciting new phase in the college’s extra-curricular Carbon Literacy Programme, which was extended to the Student Union. This marks a major step in empowering students to lead sustainability efforts both on campus and in their wider communities.

The first session, held at the Redbridge Campus, set the tone for the long-term journey. Through the programme, students are engaging in:

  • Interactive climate awareness workshops
  • Action-focused sustainability projects to drive change
  • Digital learning to enhance accessibility

As a result, students are gaining essential life skills such as critical thinking, advocacy and problem-solving – all while boosting their CVs and UCAS applications.

Emma Wood, Group Head of Tutorial and Enrichment, said Green Week was a brilliant success. “Students engaged with important environmental and sustainability topics as well as had fun taking part in all the activities. There were origami and stone painting stations, carbon footprint calculators, they made bird feeders using recycled plastic and created their own interactive pledges!

“Our exclusive pop-up charity shop, run by the Sue Ryder team, was a huge hit – with plenty of bargains and mystery boxes on offer. We were also pleased to welcome back former Havering Sixth Form student Mark Whiley, now part of the Gidea Park Wombles group, who do so much to help keep our local environment clean and tidy.”

Throughout the week, students also took part in environmental quizzes and debates about climate change, fast fashion, food waste and sustainable living.

By embedding sustainability into everyday student life, New City College is supporting their personal development and strengthening the commitment to a greener future.
