We are proud that nearly 350 of our Science students have progressed into medicine

"We secure meaningful work experience and guide students through every step towards medical school and university."

In this blog, Nurul Islam, a Science teacher at New City College, sets out how Science courses at Tower Hamlets Campus are the first step for students aiming for success in medical careers:

At our New City College Tower Hamlets Campus, I have the privilege of teaching students who arrive with big ambitions – and nowhere is that more evident than in our Science department. For many of our learners, studying Science here is not just about passing exams, it is the first decisive step towards a career in medicine and other respected professions.

As part of our Ofsted Outstanding college, we are committed to guiding students on a journey towards academic excellence, grounded in opportunity, industry insight and strong community values. We believe in giving every student the very best start in life – and our track record speaks for itself.

Nearly 350 students have progressed from our campus into careers in medicine. Many are now practising as consultants and GPs, serving communities across London and beyond. Others have gone on to become dentists, pharmacists, engineers and teachers. In fact, some have returned to Tower Hamlets Campus to teach in our department, becoming valued colleagues and role models for the next generation.

350 future doctors. And counting!

In our local community, becoming a doctor is an aspiration shared by many young people. We understand that ambition and we match it with extensive, structured support. From the moment students join us, we guide them through the university application process, helping them craft strong personal statements, providing detailed and supportive references, and arranging meaningful work experience placements that strengthen their applications.

Our location, just minutes from Canary Wharf, gives students access to leading employers and industry professionals. Through placements, workshops and insight days, they gain invaluable exposure to the world of work. These experiences help them develop confidence, professional awareness and the skills needed to thrive in competitive medical and STEM careers.

While academic achievement is central to what we do, it is not the whole story. We prioritise work placements, professional networking and inclusive support. We are proud to provide an environment where every student feels respected and supported – from accommodating prayer times to offering a variety of halal meal options – so that they can succeed both personally and professionally.

This holistic approach is one of the key reasons families choose our college. We have strong, long-standing links within the local community, and the continuity of our alumni network is something we celebrate. When former students return after university to teach here, it speaks volumes about the strength of our college community and the belief our students have in the education they received.

For any student considering a future in medicine or the wider sciences, Tower Hamlets Campus is more than a place of study, it is the starting point of a journey that has already led nearly 350 students into successful professional careers, with many more set to follow.
