New City Salon opens its doors to train the next generation of hair and beauty professionals

New City College officially opened its brand new commercial salon – New City Salon – with a celebration launch event at the Ardleigh Green Campus attended by local dignitaries, employers, industry partners and members of the community.

Hailed as a ‘superb professional workplace’, the salon is fully equipped with the latest furniture, products, tools and technology and will provide state-of-the-art training facilities for students studying Hair and Beauty courses.

Guests, including Deputy Mayor of Havering Cllr Barry Mugglestone, and former Mayor Cllr Stephanie Nunn, gathered for a first look at the salon interior and were treated to complimentary mini treatments from NCC’s talented students.

They had the chance to view the facilities at close hand and also the other exciting redevelopment plans currently in progress at the Ardleigh Green Campus.

Principal Janet Smith joined Deputy Principal Jonathan Briggs along with Hair and Beauty tutors to welcome and greet guests.

Jonathan said: “NCC regularly engages with employers, and they often tell us that while young people may have the qualifications, they don’t always have the work-ready behaviours or real-world experience.

“Our new Hair and Beauty salons are designed to change that. These commercial salons simulate the world of work and give students hands-on experience with real clients – meaning they leave us not just qualified, but fully prepared to thrive in their careers.”

Guests from industry partners such as Toni & Guy, KVN Hair and Beauty, Maya & Co Beauty Salon, Nefretiti Aesthetics, Richard Ward Hair & Metrospa, and Moroccan Rose Beauty – mingled with students and alumni, learning more about the curriculum, training style and aspirations of those building their future careers at New City College. Working with partners like these in the industry enables NCC to provide many additional opportunities for students.

Darren Purdie, Head of Education Provision and Inclusion at the London Borough of Havering, was impressed by the facilities and the enthusiasm of the students. He said: “This was a terrific opportunity to see the excellent work invested by New City College into this vocational provision.

“The setting exudes a superb professional workplace that will give the students the very best experience as they work towards their qualifications. Seeing the students demonstrate their skills so confidently shows just how effective this environment will be for their growth. I can only look forward to the future development of vocational training hubs within the NCC plan, and the huge benefits this will bring for the young people of Havering.”

The launch of New City Salon is the first of many important new developments across the Ardleigh Green Campus and guests were interested to see the blueprints and computer-generated images of the future changes planned for the campus.

To top off the evening, guests left with goody bags filled with professional products, kindly donated by partners Eve Taylor and Chris & Sons.
