In this blog, Computer Science teacher Altaf Ismail talks about the added opportunities available on the Computing courses at Tower Hamlets Campus and points out that the campus location is a huge benefit for students hoping to progress into digital careers:
As a Computer Science tutor at New City College’s Tower Hamlets Campus, I often say to my students that opportunity is closer than they think. Being just five minutes from Canary Wharf gives our students access to top employers and real industry experience – and that proximity makes a genuine difference to their futures.
At our Ofsted Outstanding Tower Hamlets Campus, we support our students both inside and outside the classroom. Of course, high-quality teaching sits at the heart of what we do, but we know that technical knowledge alone is not enough. Alongside core lessons, we run curriculum-focused workshops designed to develop the wider skills that employers look for – from communication and teamwork to problem-solving and professionalism. These workshops help students secure part-time roles while they study and, more importantly, prepare them for long-term career success.
Connect with leading tech employers
Our campus location is a significant advantage. Being just minutes away from Canary Wharf means we can connect students directly with leading employers across the technology and finance sectors. Many of these companies work closely with us, offering industry placements, skills workshops and insight days that give our learners a clear understanding of how their classroom learning translates into the workplace. Not every college or sixth form can offer this level of direct employer engagement, and we are proud of the access we provide.
Work experience is a key part of our students’ journey. Academic study is vital, but so too is building professional networks and gaining practical, real-world experience.
By the time our students complete their course, they are not only qualified, they are confident, connected and ready to progress into employment, apprenticeships or higher education.
We also recognise that student success depends on feeling supported and respected. We take care to meet the needs of our diverse community and their families. Our timetable is structured to accommodate prayer times, making it straightforward for Muslim students to fulfil their religious commitments. In addition, our canteen offers a wide range of food options, with most meals halal and clearly labelled. Creating an inclusive environment where students’ cultural and dietary needs are understood and supported, is central to our ethos.
Ultimately, our aim is simple: to give every student the strongest possible start in their career. With outstanding teaching, meaningful industry experience and a supportive college community, Tower Hamlets Campus is a place where ambition turns into opportunity.
