Queen Camilla takes cake baked by students home for her tea!

Cake decorating students from New City College had the incredible honour of baking a cake for Queen Camilla – who was so delighted with it, she took it home for tea with King Charles!

The adult students, who are on the Beginners and Intermediate Cake Baking and Cake Decorating courses as part of NCC’s short skills outreach offer, created a beautiful round six-inch themed cake and a batch of hand-piped lemon drizzle and vanilla raspberry cupcakes for the Queen.

Camilla was presented with the themed cake by NCC’s Adult Community Learning teacher Farheen Shaikh, who said: “It was exciting – a surreal experience and an amazing opportunity for the learners to demonstrate their skills to Queen Camilla. It is not every day you get to show off your work to such a grand audience.”

The Queen was delighted with the large cake, which was expertly decorated with a theme of enlightenment and limitless vision. When she saw it, Camilla said: “Oh that’s brilliant, absolutely wonderful. It seems a shame to cut it and ruin it. I’ll take it home with me and I’ll have it for tea today with the King.”

Farheen also gave the Queen a gift of a precious scarf from Pakistan, which Camilla said she would treasure.

NCC runs skills and wellness courses for adults in outreach centres across east London as part of its work in the community. After completing the course, some of the cake baking and decorating students go on to set up their own successful cake making businesses.

In partnership with the Mulberry Academy, NCC teachers run the short skills classes for adults at some of the school’s sites. The students were asked to bake for Queen Camilla when she toured the Mulberry Academy London Dock school.

During lunch, when she was joined by staff, parents and community representatives, the Queen admired the stunning cupcakes, baked and decorated by NCC students, when they took centre stage on the dining table.

Luthfa Begum, NCC’s Group Curriculum Director for Adult Education, said: “We are so proud of Farheen and our students for creating such beautiful cakes for the Queen. It was an honour for them and truly rewarding to know that their cakes were appreciated by not only Camilla, but also King Charles.”
