Sport students hailed as heroes after witnessing car crash

Five quick-thinking Sport students from New City College Epping Forest have been praised as heroes and presented with awards after leaping into action when they witnessed a car crash involving a pregnant woman just yards from their campus.

Chace Ratcliffe, Jesse Ansen, Joshua Feldman, Ozzie Hunt, and Blessing Danquah were on their way to a training session in the early afternoon a few weeks ago when they saw the collision between two vehicles in The Broadway, Debden.

One of the students said: “We saw the crash happen right in front of us. It happened so suddenly and was quite shocking to see, but our first thought was to go and help the people involved.”

Without hesitation, the boys sprang into action.

The crash had caused a brief hold-up in The Broadway, so while one of the students called the emergency services, the others took control of the situation by directing traffic around the vehicles.

They also checked up on the drivers and passengers – one a pregnant woman with a child – all the while helping to keep the scene calm and prevent further danger to anyone.

Paramedics arrived shortly afterwards to assess the people involved. Fortunately, no one sustained serious injuries and the road was quickly restored to normal.

One of the people involved in the collision later contacted New City College to express their thanks to the students. They praised them for being helpful, calm and mature.

In recognition of their initiative and great citizenship, the five students were presented with awards and vouchers by NCC Epping Forest Campus Deputy Principal Michelle Letch.

Michelle said: “We are very proud of these students who worked as a team and showed great courage and community spirit. Their response in a high-pressure situation was outstanding. This award is just a small token of thanks to recognise their actions and the way they represented New City College that day.”
