Success for graphic design students in global competition

Three Creative Arts students from New City College were shortlisted in a global competition which attracted entrants from prestigious art universities, including New York (NYU).

The students, Sofia Hrabatin, Gaina Gaibo and Sania Meih, pictured above with their teacher Vanessa Bell, received special mention for their submitted artwork in the Creative Conscience Awards 2024.

It is an impressive achievement for the three teenagers because they were competing against other, older finalists, including Level 6 graduates and postgraduates of the highest calibre.

The three students, who all study BTEC Art & Design Practice at NCC Redbridge Campus, entered the category of Advertising and were all recognised by the judges who shortlisted them from the thousands of entries.

Principal of Redbridge Campus, Jacqueline Mitchell, said it was excellent news and the students should be proud of themselves.

Jeff Wiles, Senior Curriculum Manager for the Creative Industries at Redbridge Campus added: “We are delighted that three of our students were shortlisted in this prestigious creative competition. It shows that our Graphic Design students, by the end of their first year, are producing work of exemplary professional standards.

“I cannot praise the art and design team highly enough. In all my years in education I have never seen a team that comes close to enabling students to reach this level and quality of work. I am so proud of them.”

The Creative Conscience Awards are run by a group of artists to support their work as a charity and tackle social and environmental issues in creative ways. They aim to build a fairer, healthier, more sustainable and regenerative world.

Entrants can produce pieces that highlight issues and push their curiosity to create the change they want to see in the world. The three NCC students chose issues they felt needed more awareness.
