Young musicians take centre stage at New City College Battle of the Bands contest

Havering school students raised the roof at New City College’s Battle of the Bands competition, filling the Queen’s Theatre in Hornchurch with an electric atmosphere.

Bands from six borough schools – Frances Bardsley Academy, Bower Park Academy, Marshalls Park Academy, Redden Court School, Hall Mead School and The Royal Liberty School – each performed a three-song set in front of a packed audience.

Music students from New City College Ardleigh Green Campus played a key part in the event’s success, supporting every band with their set-up, sound checks, technical assistance and mentoring throughout the event. They were also part of the judging panel, along with NCC staff.

For many of the school performers, ranging from Year 9 to Year 11, it was their first time on a professional stage – and they rose to the challenge, showing talent, confidence and composure.

The winning band, The Royal Liberty Rockers, wowed the crowd with powerful renditions of Rocket Man, Lose Control and Sweet Child O’ Mine. Band members Thomas, Oliver, Ollie and Reggie sung and performed exceptionally well to take the title.

Andy Greaves, NCC Deputy Group Curriculum Director for Creative and Digital, said the event highlighted the impressive talent across the borough: “Every single student was an incredible ambassador for their school. Their performances were creative, confident and full of energy. Hosting this event was a privilege – it really showcased just how much musical talent we have in our local community.”

Each band received a certificate for taking part, and the champions, Royal Liberty Rockers, won the top prize of an exclusive recording experience at NCC’s industry-standard studio facilities at Ardleigh Green Campus, Hornchurch.

A spokesperson for Hall Mead School praised the event, saying: “Our students had an unforgettable time – from performing on a professional stage, to mixing with other talented Havering bands. The whole experience was inspiring and brilliantly organised. Huge thanks to New City College for creating such a fantastic opportunity for us all.”
