“With the strong support of my teachers, I learned that nothing is impossible if you keep trying and always do your best.”

Abdur began his journey at New City College as an ESOL student after moving to the UK from Bangladesh. Through determination, hard work and the support of his tutors, Abdur has progressed from hardly speaking any English to fulfilling his dream of going to university.

Throughout his college journey he has earned prestigious achievement awards and numerous accolades from his teachers. Outside of his studies he secured a promotion in his part-time job. Here, he shares his experience of studying at New City College and the impact it has had on his life.

Can you tell us about the courses you studied at New City College?

I began my journey at New City College’s Tower Hamlets campus in 2023, where I studied ESOL courses. These courses helped me to improve my English skills and gave me the confidence to move forward with my education and career.

What were your goals when you first started your course?

When I first started my course, my goal was to become an electrician. I passed all my ESOL exams and moved on to Maths, English, Science and Digital Skills qualifications. However, during my time at college, my confidence grew and my ambitions changed. I decided I’d love to go to university and do a degree, so I worked hard and applied for a place. I was so proud when I heard I had successfully completed the interview process and had been accepted.

Which university are you attending?

While studying at New City College, I was encouraged so much by my teachers to aim high, so I made applications to universities and I have since received an offer to study Hospitality Management and Leadership at the London College of Contemporary Arts (LCCA). My degree will be awarded by the University for the Creative Arts, so I am very happy to have this opportunity. Alongside my studies, I currently work at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel, where I was recently promoted from Supervisor to Office Coordinator. I am responsible for supporting daily office operations and ensuring everything runs smoothly.

How was your experience of New City College? Did the teachers or any support services help you succeed?

My experience at New City College was extremely positive. I received strong support from my teachers, and especially from Shenaly, who was my Pastoral Tutor in both the ESOL and Business departments. When I became a class representative, I tried my best to support other students who were struggling, and Shenaly encouraged me throughout. She always pushed me to look to the future, believe in myself, and aim high.

What skills or confidence do you feel you gained during your time at New City College?

One of the most important things I gained was belief in myself. I came to the UK from Bangladesh in 2022, and at first, I felt I couldn’t do many things because everything was new, especially the language. Even during my first year, there were many challenges, but I didn’t give up. With the strong support of my teachers, I built my confidence and learned that nothing is impossible if you keep trying and always do your best.

What are you most proud of achieving so far?

I am most proud of receiving the Student Achievement Award 2025 from New City College Tower Hamlets campus, as well as being honoured with a Student Achievement Award from Tower Hamlets Council in the same year. Progressing to university and being promoted at work also show how far I have come since starting my journey.

Would you recommend New City College and the courses you took to others?

Yes, I would definitely recommend New City College. In my opinion, NCC is an excellent college because of the strong support, dedicated teachers, and the many opportunities it provides for students to succeed.
