Kareem

“I learnt so much from the moment I started at New City College to the very end of my time there.”

Kareem studied the Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Creative Media at New City College’s Redbridge Campus and has now progressed to the University of West London to study Broadcast and Digital Journalism.

Looking back on his time at college, Kareem credits his success to the encouragement of his teachers, the industry-standard facilities and the supportive environment at NCC.

He said: “I want to thank my teachers and the friends I met for being so supportive. Without the hard work and dedication of my Media teachers, the grades I achieved wouldn’t have been possible. During my second year I struggled with confidence, but with advice from my tutor and a lot of perseverance, I made it through!”

Why did you choose to study at New City College?

I chose to study Media at NCC because of the facilities and because I’d heard it was a great course. Before I applied, I went to an Open Day and saw all the amazing equipment they had. I decided right there that it was where I wanted to study after school.

What were your first impressions of the college?

The college has that feeling where you walk in and immediately feel comfortable. The atmosphere and vibe are really good and the place is very friendly. There’s a nice common room and lots of spaces where you can relax with friends or get on with your work.

How did the course prepare you for your next steps?

The way the teachers get you ready for what comes next is really good. It’s kind of like university – they give you a task and expect you to work independently, but they’re always there to support you. That style of learning helped me so much and prepared me for higher education.

What did you enjoy most about the Creative Media course?

As part of the course we did podcasts, audio and video work, which all helped me get to where I am now. Compared to other colleges, I feel like we learnt much more and got real hands-on experience with professional equipment.

How did your teachers support you?

During lessons you get so much support. My teachers were always there to help and push me to do my best. When I was struggling with confidence in my second year, my tutor really helped me believe in myself again.

What are you doing now?

I’m now studying Broadcast and Digital Journalism at the University of West London. The skills and confidence I gained at NCC have made a huge difference in helping me take this next step.

What would you say to anyone thinking about studying at NCC?

I would definitely recommend it. NCC gave me so much from the very beginning to the very end of my time there. The teachers, the facilities and the overall experience really helped shape my future.

We wish Kareem every success in his future career in journalism!
